In a press release, Taiwan-based electronics company BenQ has just announced a pair of full HD LED televisions. According to BenQ, the ML2241 and ML2441 sets will be the first small format LED-backlighted models in Europe. The slim edge models focus on the target groups of students and young professionals.

While the first group could like those PC capable televisions for reasons of space, the second might like the idea of a secondary television set, the company stated. With a construction depth of barely four centimetres and 19 millimetres at the thinnest point, the space-saving models are said to be artworks of its own.

Compared to common CCFL-lighted televisions, 21.5 inch ML2241 and 23,5 inch ML2441 consume up to 40 per cent less power. Standby-mode only requires 0.5 Watts, BenQ notes, meeting EuP 2010’s new eco-design regulation. Both of the BenQ TVs are in hard-switch design allowing users to completely disconnect them from electric power supply.

Thanks to their LED technology the TVs offer an ultra-high dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, duping comparable models from other makers that are at the same price level and provide similar features, said BenQ. According to the company, the contrast precision the sets provide adapts to any individual movie or gaming scene at the best, providing true black and deeper colour as well as detailed definition to reveal the hard-to-notice elements situated in the darkest areas.

The 16:9 format panels provide a resolution of 1,920 to 1,080 pixels and are said to be able of the representation of 1080p 24Hz signals. Also aboard: BenQ's proprietary ambient light sensor “Senseye 5”, a method of image enhancement that smoothes rapids movements as well as it optimizes colour and contrast.

A flat panel TV being operated with a computer or at a television connection is the least that can be expected by customers today, but BenQ points out that there is some extra functionality making the sets stand alone multimedia solutions. Thanks to one USB 2.0 port and three HDMI connections, the new models are able to play videos from USB storage devices or serve as imaging system for video consoles. H.264 video codec support is part of their multimedia functions. The speakers BenQ integrated, clang in „SRS TruSurround HD” quality and can be operated to play music even if the screen itself is turned off.

Besides their capability to play music and videos the ML2241 and ML2441 work as digital image frames, too. BenQ’s so called SmartCliQ function allows to show, zoom and rotate photographies and picture galleries stored on USB devices. According to BenQ, their new ML models thanks to their huge range of functions are the ultimate media center displays. They will be in stores in most European countries this month without BenQ naming introductory prices.
